This one was also as riveting as everyone said. The Hunger Games is a reality-show like death match between randomly drawn children from each of the twelve tributaries of a post-apocalyptic world. The tributaries must force their young participate in this event as penitence for a long-ago rebellion against the domineering Capital that now controls their nation. After going through a training and styling process, these teen competitors are dropped into a rigged outdoor arena, where they must battle it out to the death--on live TV for the whole world to see. The winner is deemed the victor, but of what?
Katniss Everdeen is our protagonist--a tough, yet bright, skilled hunter from one of the poorer, coal mining districts of the nation of Panem. Her whole life has been a struggle for survival, and she plays the game with a strong will to return home to the young beloved sister for whom she has volunteered to replace as a game contestant. At the games, Katniss pairs up with her fellow district 12 comrade, Peeta, whose back story presents him as a more charismatic, charming character with an ulterior motive for keeping Katniss alive.
With quick diction and a young adult-geared writing style, you literally can't put this book down as it seems to play out in real time. While grateful for its fictitious nature, it will have you questioning the effects of both media and the elements of competition on our society. It's book one in a trilogy, with a movie targeted for 2011. Definitely recommend!
