In my extended family, I host the birthdays. And the family reunions, baby showers and most of the holidays. But always the birthdays.
I don't know if as a small child I once performed triage for some poor kid whose birthday was not adequately celebrated or what, but birthdays are my Achilles heel. In my book, they must be celebrated.
So, I mean it, family members, when I say it's no big deal for me to make you appetizers and a salad and a fruit platter and a steamed vegetable and a three-layer strawberry cake and fresh citrus punch and our family's special recipe of chicken rolls for all 25 cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents just because you got a little bit older. I'll even throw in a little "Birthday Person" trivia game for all to play because that's just how scarred I am.
