San Clemente resident Autumn McAlpin and her sister Allison Chapman came away with $250,000 after their appearance on the NBC-TV game show "Minute to Win It" ended Tuesday night.
At the beginning of Tuesday's episode, their second on the series, Chapman completed a task of stacking four martini glasses, three of them filled with Christmas ornaments. That brought the pair's total winnings to $250,000.
In the next minute-long challenge, Chapman and McAlpin both tried unsuccessfully to balance the tips of three candy canes on a suspended nylon cord. That ended their quest for the maximum $3 million prize.
McAlpin is a mother of four who writes the "Family Life" column for the Sun Post News, The Orange County Register's community newspaper in San Clemente. She and Chapman, who are originally from Memphis, Tenn., plan to use their winnings to help their mother retire by paying off the mortgage on her house.
