"Mirror Mirror" is the first of two Snow White spinoffs this year and without a doubt will be the fairest version of them all in young family-appeal (as opposed to the darker "Snow White and the Huntsman," to be released June 1.)
Reminiscent of the playful tone in "Enchanted," and vibrant with director Tarsem Singh’s trademark visual feast in the elaborate, colorful costumes and set design, "Mirror Mirror" is a light-hearted, humor-infused action comedy that will keep kids entranced and parents chuckling throughout.
Julia Roberts plays the maniacal queen kids can’t even try to hate (even just a little) because she speaks in laconic hilarity, and infuses her every narcissistic act with that infectious smirk and sparkle parents will recognize from"America’s Sweetheart." And she gets the best costumes.
It is from her character’s snarky decrees and more reflective voice-over narration that we receive all the best lines and their imbedded themes. But the film’s flaw is that these themes are like an overdose of multi-hued bumper cars thrown into a ring -- there are too many cars to get anywhere, but just enough color to distract you from the congestion. In the end, the film ties up with a Bollywood number characteristic of its upbeat tone, so really it’s a traffic jam worth the ride...
