We Aren't Buying Costumes This Year!

as published at www.ocregister.com on Oct. 26, 2011

This Halloween, I’m not buying costumes. So bah humbug, or drat Dracula, or whatever it is you say when you feel like hurling pitchforks at Costume Castle.

It’s not that I don’t want to enter your aisles. It’s just that there’s no point. Because each year, no matter how many eBay auctions I enter to find the perfect get-ups for my kids, on Halloween morning, they all decide to abandon the plan.

We start out every October with good, store-bought intentions. Over the years, we’ve accumulated pumpkins, ghosts, cowboys, the Sesame Street collection, firemen, superheroes, the complete Nativity cast, and both the Walmart and Target lines of Disney princess knock-offs, to name a few. All are available for rental -- as all are new with tags (read: non-returnable).

Last year, little Gracie refused the beautiful Rapunzel gown and wig we forked over half her Christmas budget to buy from the real Disney store. Night of, she chose her dollar store, sparkly flapper tank dress with a rip up the side. “Dis is what weel pwincesses weah, Mommy!” Yeah, after the evil stepsisters have their way with them. By the third house, the scratchy seams got to her and she was trick-or-treating in a tank top, no pants.
